Googleが、サンフランシスコ全域に、無料でWi-Fiサービスを提供するというプロジェクトの、パートナーであるISPのEarthlinkが経営不振により、プロジェクトから退くことが決まりました。今後もWi-Fi計画そのものは、続きますが、Earthlinkによるパートナーシップはなくなりました。

Earthlink Chief Executive Rolla Huff told Newsom during a telephone call "they were not going to be able to fulfill their end of the bargain," said Ballard. "Mr. Huff made it clear it wasn't going to happen with Earthlink; they are getting out of the Wi-Fi business."

訳）（サンフランシスコ市長のスポークスマン）バラード氏の発表によると、アースリンクの最高責任者(CEO)ローラ・ハッフは、サンフランシスコ市長のニューソンと電話で会話し、「（EarthlinkがGoogleとのWi-Fi計画の）契約を満了することが出来なくなり、Wi-Fiビジネスからは、退く。」ということを明らかにした。

※bargainとは、英英辞書によると「an agreement between parties settling what each shall give and take or perform and receive in a transaction.」つまり、「契約、取引」

アトランタを拠点とするEarthlinkは、すでにサンフランシスコを含む４都市でオフィスを閉じ、約半数にあたる社員９００人を解雇し、経費を削減すると発表しているそうです。
